Pictures Put Words in Our Brains

It seems to me that a good photograph sends a message. But how we interpret an image is personal and may trigger laughter or tears, fear or peacefulness, pride or shame.

When photographing sports I follow the ball and try to capture those elusive award-winning scores. It’s a rush for the photographer and a proud moment in time for the parents to treasure.

But not every photo is a winning point or dramatic touchdown. As in this example (header photo) during a girl’s water polo game at Lodi High in 2015, sometimes you simply stop time and can only imagine what’s really going on.
