If you were at the Neighborhood Watch Spring Fling in the Park in Woodbridge you would have said, “this is great”. Children playing old fashion musical chairs, bean bag tossing, hop sack racing, adults relaxing, people eating hot dogs, an antique Schwinn Bicycle collection, the Ham Radio Operators with antenna made from fishing poles, people dancing, face painting, kids slip and sliding, bubble gum blowing contest and a good ol water balloon toss and a hot dog eating contest with the winner eating nine hot dogs in five minutes. If ya wanted to feed your soul or spirit there were Pastors from three different churches to meet your needs. People playing, people singing, a Community came together. For four hours it was old fashion fun. The Sheriff, the STARS, the Sheriff K-9 Unit, the Woodbridge Fire Department and the FDW Association mixed and blended with adults and children to bring down barriers that once created friction and distance. If you were there you witnessed a family of Community. Ten years ago this park was off limits to the public. It was controlled and run by gang members. Three Citizens decided to take their park back, to take their block back, and to take their neighborhood back. In partnership with the authorities, one day at a time Woodbridge has succeeded. Don’t say you can’t do anything to make your block or neighborhood better, don’t say it’s a lost cause, sure it’s scary, but it’s worse if you do nothing. Partner with your local authorities, form a Neighborhood Watch and watch your block, your neighborhood, your community change for the better, one day at a time. Remember the community that plays together, stay together
