When the captain asked if I would be interested in taking over our Facebook page, excitement wasn’t my first emotion. I don’t have a Facebook account. I don’t tweet, and I can barely answer my emails. So I did what anybody else would do in my position. I told the boss, “I would love to” and then went and found a much younger officer and bribed them to show me how Facebook works.
As I learned how to navigate Facebook I quickly realized what a positive tool this site can be for law enforcement. Not only can we share important information with the public but they can communicate with us more freely.
Now that our site is up and running our hope is to update it daily. Current posts have included training updates, promotions, and recent arrests. My plan for the site over the next few months involves soliciting help from the community to locate wanted subjects, releasing crime trends and statistics, recognizing officers for their work, and sharing details of recent events our department has become involved in. You will also be able to check past Behind the Badge articles, view press releases and ask questions of our department.
Hopefully this experience will lead to more interaction with the public and we will be able to develop relationships with a whole new group of citizens who utilize social networking.
There are some housekeeping items for the site though. Our site will accept comments and posts, however, they will be subject to review. We will not accept friend requests nor will we allow viewers to upload photos or video to the site.
