Amateur radio (Aka: Ham Radio) is both a hobby and a service in which participants, called “hams”, use various types of radio communications equipment to communicate with other radio amateurs for public services, recreation and self-training. Amateur radio operation is licensed in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission.

Modes of operation include: Voice (SSB, AM, FM), Morse Code, Radio Teletype, Voice Over IP (Internet), Packet Radio, Amateur Television, Satellite and others using a broad spectrum of frequencies.  Activities include: practice emergency communications, “Fox hunting”, contesting, antenna design, QSL card collecting, DX’ing (long distant communitions, expeditions, low-power operation, moon-bounce, high speed telegraphy, home brew radio gear, and many more.
